Ladies Gowns: Polonaise
gown has a fitted bodice which
laces closed over a lightly boned reversible stomacher
(triangular shaped insert) and made with open skirt to
reveal matching or or contrasting petticoats. The
underskirt is a drawstring unless the "ties in front and
back" skirt is requested. Graceful flounces at the elbow
were fashonable during the 1760's - 70's. See Eighteenth
Century Clothing at Williamsburg, by Linda
Baumgarten.
Our Sacque Back gown features
a fitted bodice, elbow length sleeves ending in a small
cuff, an open skirt to reveal a matching or contrasting
petticoat and a full pleated "sacque" that falls
gracefully from the shoulders to the hem. Please call so
we can discuss details.
Note: The Polonaise and Sacque Back gowns
should be worn with stays and pocket hoops
for the correct 18th Century look and fit. We will
be glad to make these items for you also. Please see
"Accessories" for pricing information.
Our Round gown is a
one piece gown with a fitted bodice which laps at center
front and pins closed over the waist of the front skirt
panel. The elbow length sleeve features a small cuff.
This is a very comfortable everyday gown and is also
usually worn with stays.

Short Gown (la
casaque) - Jacket worn anytime a full gown is not
required. The design varied with optional trims and either
square or round necklines. Some tied, others buttoned or
laced closed. An apron (see below) was often worn over the
Short Gown. See Historic Colonial French Dress
by Johnson, Forbes, and Delaney.
Our short gown is about hip length with 3/4 length
sleeves. It is unlined and shaped with a waistline and
peplum style skirt. Small brass pins are provided at no
additional cost.
